CROSBY MINT FARM (of St. Johns, Michigan/Mint City, USA)

"In addition to having what appears to be the oldest surviving still in the country, the Crosby Farms operation also appears to be the oldest mint farm in continuous operation in the United States. The key word here is "continuous" - that it has cultivated and processed mint since J.E. Crosby purchased the property before World War I." Ephraim K. Smith, President; Heritage Production, Inc.

This farm is being foreclosed on and the redemption period is over on August 14th, 2009, the first day of the St. Johns 25th Annual Mint Festival! The bank will own the farm and will be in a position to start eviction proceedings.

With enough inventory to pay the debt, $325,000 worth of mint essential oil products needs to be sold byAUGUST 14TH

Uses for Peppermint Oil

Create your own healing peppermint massage oil which can be applied topically to help relieve a headache. Mix equal parts of peppermint essential oil and extra-virgin, cold pressed olive oil and gently massage into your temples, jaws and the back of your neck. Do not wipe off the oil when finished, rather allow it to absorb fully into your skin.

**I just take a bit on my finger and massage it on my temple. Most of my headaches start at the top of my neck. I rub a bit there too.**

Use a peppermint steam treatment, particularly if your headache is caused by sinus pressure. Boil a small pot of water and remove from heat, adding 10 drops of peppermint essential oil. Drape your head with a towel and lean over the steaming water, inhaling deeply for 10 minutes.

**My kids don’t sit for this. If they are feeling this bad they are lying down. If they feel good enough to sit up then they won’t sit still for this. So one way to use steam for them is to just drop a few drops in a small saucepan of water and let it simmer on low heat for a while. Soon the smell will fill the air.**

**But if the congestion is so bad they cannot breath try the next tip.**
Relax in a warm peppermint bath to help reduce muscle tension as you inhale the healing peppermint vapors and relieve a headache. Simple add 10 to 15 drops off peppermint essential oil to a warm bath and soak.

**This is great for kids especially if they are wheezing from the congestion of a cold. I shut the door to the bathroom and turn on the hot water really high. Then you could plug the tub and drop in the oil. DO NOT place the baby in the tub because it is to hot. Sit there with the baby next to the tub. Just let this be a relaxing time for you to bond with your child.**

**If your child is coming down with a cold rub the oil on the bottom of their feet to help them breath. The nerve endings in their feet will absorb the oil into their system and help fight the invading viruses or bacteria.**

**My kids sometimes wake up with pain in their legs. I rub a few drops of oil on the sore leg and send them back to bed. It works just as well as children’s Tylenol and is all natural. I also do this for myself if I have sore muscles.**

**Kellie's notes. These are just ways I have used this oil. I found out these techniques either by way of mouth or by my own experimentation.**

Counting

In the last post I mentioned the Recommended Daily Values for nutrients. It got me thinking about my diet. Am I getting the full amount of nutrients I need daily? How do I accomplish this? Well lets take on an idea that has been used in diets before.

Counting.

Counting points and calories is good, but are you getting the nutrients you need? I propose that we look at the Daily values chart and then get to know our foods better.

Here are two websites that give us a daily value chart. Just use the one that you understand better.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-and-nutrition/AN00284
http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units/scales/dailyvalues.htm

I know that for some counting is not fun. I would not want to have to do it forever. I just think it is a good tool to see where we are currently and then use it to make a plan for our diets.

Broccoli

I have been picking a lot of this beautiful vegetable the past couple of weeks. My family and I love to eat this. We tend to forget that there are other vegetables sometimes. But after doing some research I have found that that is not such a bad thing.

This wonderful cruciferous (type of vegetable) has been shown to fend off cancer, osteoporosis, birth defects, and heart disease. It can also boost your immunity.

Broccoli is considered to be the most beneficial of the cruciferous family of vegetables which include Brussels-sprouts, cabbage, kale, turnips, cauliflower, and collards. Do not think, however, that you do not have to eat any of the others, they have their own benifits. Broccoli just has a special combination that is not found in the others.

Broccoli is chocked full of super nutrients. Each one has its place in keeping us healthy.

Nutrients
I3C (indole-3-carbinol)
Sulforphane
Beta-carotene
Vitamin-C
Calcium
Folate
Fiber

I3C or indole-3-carbinol and sulforphane work together to fight against cancer.

Beta-carotene is converted to Vitamin-A, an antioxidant, in the body.

In a half cup of chopped lightly steamed broccoli you get the benefit of 100% of the Daily Value of Vitamin-C. Which is approxamitaly 60 milligrams according to this website http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units/scales/dailyvalues.htm. Uncooked has even more since heat naturally kills off this nutrient.

In one cup of cooked broccoli has 72 milligrams of calcium. The recommended Daily Value (DV) is 1000 milligrams for men between the ages of 25 and 65 and women between 25 and 50. Men and women over the age of 65 need 1,500 milligrams daily and women who are pregenant or brestfeeding need 1,200 to 1,500.

Folate is a nutrient that is essential for tissue growth.

Trere are two grams of fiber in just one half cup of broccoli.
As much as the first President Bush hated broccoli we should try to incorporate it into our diets as often as possible.

Oxygen

To live healthy your body has to have a strong foundation. So let’s start at the beginning.

The most important thing your body needs is Oxygen. I can hear you saying “Duh.” If you are alive you are breathing, right? Yes, but let’s find out why we need oxygen.

The oxygen you breath in goes into your lungs and then to your blood. The blood carries it to your cells. Your cells use it to make energy so that the cells can do their work. (http://www.flightstat.nonin.com/documents/Hypoxia,%20Oxygen%20and%20Pulse%20Oximetry.pdf)

One of the main reasons I have found that we need to address oxygen is that the lack of oxygen in our cells can cause us to become ill, including what many may consider the worst illness, cancer. Please check out the quotes on this web page http://www.info-archive.com/oxyquote.htm. Please also read the article on this website. http://www.alkalizeforhealth.net/Loxygen2.htm It was a speech made by a Dr. Otto Warburg. He was a scientist who specialized in cancer research. He won a Nobel Prize for his work in 1966. http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/1931/warburg-bio.html

Now that we have established the importance of oxygen, what am I saying is wrong with us or how do we need to improve? Well first many do not get enough oxygen and may not even know it. Even if you are breathing deep you still may not be getting enough oxygen to your cells. “Abuse of the body through poor eating & drinking habits (including pollutants and toxic preservatives in our water and food supply), the use of drugs (both prescription & non-prescription), the lack of exercise, along with environmental exposures such as, air pollution caused by car exhaust and factory omissions can greatly reduce the amount of oxygen available to the body cells. If enough oxygen could be taken into the bloodstream, all the nutrients could be assimilated better and all the waste materials could be eliminated properly. Cells start the deterioration process when waste products are accumulated in the body.” (http://www.touchalife.com/oxygen.html)

Can we do anything about this? First eat healthier. Drink less carbonated drinks (yes, this includes diet soda and carbonated water). These carbonated drinks have a lot of salt and salt dehydrates your body. When you are dehydrated your cells get dehydrated and they cannot function properly. They will not pick up oxygen from the blood as efficiently. Drink more water. See this article especially the section about water verses soda. (http://www.mindconnection.com/library/health/softdrinks.htm)

We also need to exercise on a regular basis. When you get your heart rate up your blood pumps through your body faster and you need more oxygen. Make sure when you exercise you breath properly. Deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. If you breath in through your mouth you will dehydrate faster. Also you tend to breath deeper if it is in through the nose.

In the morning when I wake up groggy I do a five step breathing exercise. I adapted it from a technique I learned called Body Flex by Greer Childers. http://www.bodyflex.com/ After doing her program for about two weeks I saw improvements in my lung function. I have had asthma all my life and deep breaths made me wheeze uncomfortably. But after regularly doing this technique I was able to breath deeper. Unfortunately, I may not have been doing it properly, because one day my stomach suddenly had a sharp pain like a knife had sliced me from one side to another. So I continued the program but with a few changes. I do not use it for weight loss or as a miracle exercise program. I only use it to wake me up in the morning and to get my blood flowing.

It probably is a very good addition to your exercise regime. If done properly I begin to sweat. My pulse quickens and I can tighten certain muscle groups while doing this and they get a workout as well. It is kind of hard to explain in writing but if you really want to know what to do please e-mail me and I will send you the steps.

In summery, oxygen is the most important life giving force. It is also one of the best ways to improve your health. You will be ill less often and you will exercise more fully. I promise you will notice a difference.

Is this thing on?

On this blog we will be investigating many things regarding health. I would like to present foods and their health benefits or how they affect us in a negative way. I would like to study exercise programs. I would like to learn how the body works and how we can make it work more smoothly.

I would encourage you to investigate all of the information you see here. I would also encourage you to participate in discussing the topics presented. Please site your source so that any other participant may follow up on your claims.

Also if you have a topic you would like to see discussed here let me know. I would love this to be a very interactive source for getting to understand our health needs.
